View fullsize “Rosie’s Lunch Break” 36”x24” Oil on Canvas (Private Collection) Another example of how I love art history (and the Beach) 😊 An homage to two of my art heroes Michelangelo and Norman Rockwell. I snuck it a Michelangelo book (Pic 4) and chose to have the cover be one of my favorite Michelangelo figures from the Sistine Chapel, the Delphic Sibyl, who was described by Ancient Greek writer Pausanias, saying that the Sibyl was "born between man and goddess, daughter of sea monsters and an immortal nymph" which is perfect description for this lifeguard😊 And Rosie’s foot is on the Post she is honouring (Pic 5 - instead of Hitler’s Mein Kampf in Rockwell’s Rosie the Riveter) Rockwell’s original “Rosie” was Mary Doyle Keefe, a 19yr old telephone operator from Arlington, Vermont. View fullsize Antique meets the Ancient. I found this old self-portrait in my storage. It’s at least 20yrs old (almost an antique! 😆) I remember doing this after my NY / Whitney Museum visit and the inspiring meeting with Chuck Close. I was living in my little apartment above a coffee shop and just started teaching at Art Center, Pasadena soon after. I set up my easel in the bathroom and painted from the old medicine cabinet mirror. At the time, I was voraciously studying Art History and really absorbed in Ancient Egyptian funeral portraits (see last pic). Looking back and seeing this after many years, I’d say to myself “Not bad kid!
